    u be initial speed,

    v be final speed,

    a be acceleration,

    t be time,

    s be distance.

    (a)

    v = u + at

    14.2 = 17.8 + (- 2.7)t

    t = (17.8 - 14.2) / 2

    = 1.8 s.

    (b)

    v^2 = u^2 + 2as

    14.2^2 = 17.8^2 +  2 * (- 2.7)s

    s = (17.8^2 - 14.2^2) / (2 * 2.7)

    = 21.3 m.
