Soft drinks are commonly sold in aluminum containers. How many such containers are thrown away or recycled each year by U.S. consumers? (Assume an average of 4 cans per person each week and a population of 290 million. Type your answer using one of the following formats, 1.2e-3 for 0.0012 and 1.20e+2 for 120.)

can/yr

How many tons of aluminum does this represent? (Assume an average weight of 0.40 oz of aluminum per can.)

  1. Since there are 52 weeks in a year, then the average person would have consumed = 52 * 4 = 208 cans per year

For a total population of 290 million, the total number of containers involved would be

    290,000,000/208 =  1.39e+6

    and this would weigh

    5.56e+5 tons/year

    Hope this helps.

  2. You have all the info just multiply

    4 / person-week x 52 wk/yr x 290e6 person = 60320e6 cans

    this is 6e10 cans

    6e10 x 0.4 oz x 1 ton /32000 oz = 0.75e6 tons or 7.5e5 tons

    .
