Agent Bond is standing on a bridge, 12m above the road below, and his pursuers are getting too close for comfort. He spots a flatbed truck approaching at 25 m/s, which he measures by knowing that the telephone poles the truck is passing are 25m apart in this country. The bed of the truck is 1.5m above he road, and Bond quickly calculates how many poles away the truck should be when he jumps down from the bridge onto the truck to make his getaway. How many poles is it?

  1. he needs to fall 12 - 1.5 = 10.5 m

    accelleration is 9.8 m/s^2

    position is

    x= 1/2 a t^2

    10.5 = 1/2 * 9.8 * t^2

    t= 1.46 sec

    1.46 poles

  2. Bond's jump will be 12 - 1.5 = 10.5 m

    Acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 m/s per second

    Jump takes square root of (2 * 10.5 / 9.81) = 1.46 s

    Truck passes the poles at a rate of 25 / 25 = 1 pole per second

    So he needs to jump (just after) the truck is 1 and a half poles away
