A girl miscalculates on the last bounce and flies past the window and out of sight. A person sees her face for 0.2 seconds as she moves a distance of 2.4 meters from the bottom to the top of the window. A) how long until she reappears? B) what is her greatest height above the top of the window?

  1. let her velocity at the bottom of the window be v1 and the top of the window be v2 and g = 9.8m/s^2 then

    distance = v1t - 1/2gt^2 so

    solving for v1 we get v1 = (distance + 1/2gt^2)/t = (2.4 + 1/2(9.8)(.2)^2)/.2 = 12.98 m/s

    then using v1 - v2 = gt,

    v2 = 11.02 m/s at the top of window.

    so the time until she reaches the top of her bounce is gt = 11.02 or t = 1.12 seconds , double that until she reappears so A) 2.24 seconds

    then the height reached is 11.02 / 2 * 1.12 = 6.17meters
