Piaget Black edge past Pony Express in ‘The Memorial by Piaget’ Tournament, 8-4: Polo Recap
Sugar Erskine scored three goals and had an assist, as Piaget Black powered a commanding 8-4 win over Pony Express in the opening round of ‘The Memorial by Piaget’ tournament that took place at the Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington, on May 26,
2011.
It was another fine chilly day at the Grand Champions Polo Club where both the teams opened the game quite maturely, but it was Piaget Black that established the early dominance onto the field.
Sugar Erskine converted a penalty shot at the start of the match, putting Piaget Black ahead onto the score-board, 1-0. In the later time, Gene Goldstein scored another goal from the field to double the tally, 2-0. In a counter-offence, Ruben Gracida
accounted for a solitary goal to bring Pony Express into the score-net. The opening period ended with Piaget Black hanging onto a single goal, 2-1.
The two teams exchanged a couple of goals in the second chukka and increased the suspense in the game. Marc Ganzi scored off a penalty shot and expanded the lead up to two goals. However, it could not last for long as Tomas Goti notched a couple of
goals of which one came on a penalty shot while other from the field and tied the knots at 3-3. Erskine added another goal in the dying moments of the second period to regain the lead, 4-3.
The third period was completely belonged to Piaget Black which obtained a solitary goal while holding Pony Express score-less in the period. Erskine marked a goal from the field effort and held a two-goal lead at the halftime, 5-3.
Interestingly, after a fast and furious game, no goal was scored from the two sides in the fourth set of play. After missing a lot of shots from the two teams, the game moved forward with Pony Express trailing by two goals, 5-3.
In the second last chukka, the Piaget Black team played most offensive part of the game by scoring three goals and holding Pony Express goal-less. Ganzi opened the period by scoring a goal from the field while Lucas Lalor added a couple of goals to
take an insurmountable lead, 8-3.
Amazingly, only one goal was scored in the final seven minutes of play and it belonged to Pony Express. Goti made a lengthy run and executed a powerful shot that sailed perfectly into the Piaget Black goalposts. With the final whistle, the Piaget Black
team won the game by a convincing four-goal margin, 8-4.
Erskine was at his best and set the pace with three goals. Lalor and Ganzi scored a couple of goals each besides a solitary goal from Goldstein. From the other side, Goti and Gracida scored three and one goal respectively, in the loss.
