Piaget Black wins Consolation match of ‘The Memorial by Piaget’ Cup - Part One
After winning one and drawing another out of total three round-robin matches, Piaget Black won the consolation round of ‘The Memorial by Piaget’ tournament. The round-robin league system matches were held at the Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington, on
May 29, 2011.
The opening contest between Piaget Black and Pony Express was concluded at a 3-3 draw, as both sides failed to make the game decisive in the regular time period. Goti of Pony Express stole the show who scored the tying goal with eighteen seconds left on
the clock in a three-chukka action.
The two teams started the game quite maturely and displayed impressive defence in the opening seven and half minute of play. Both the teams carried out plenty of attacks against each other, but these were denied from the either side. It was Pony Express
that drew the first blood in the dying moments of the first round and obtained the lead in the hands of Ruben Gracida. He struck a powerful shot that sailed perfectly into Piaget Black goal-post to put his team ahead onto the score-board at the end of the
first period, 1-0.
The two teams further sped-up the game in the second set of play, as one wanted to level the score while other wanted to hold back the lead. However, it was Piaget Black that displayed the impressive performance and took the game into their favour. It received
a couple of goals while holding opposite goal-less throughout the period.
Lucas Lalor and Marc Ganzi scored one goal each while their resilient defence kept the Pony Express strikers of the score-board. The Piaget Black was hanging on to a single goal lead, 2-1 after the two chukkas of play.
In the third and final set of play, Goti notched a score at the start of the period and had it all even at two-all. Ganzi scored another go-ahead goal to put Piaget Black ahead onto the score-board. It seemed that the Piaget Black won the game at 3-2. However,
Pony Express obtained the final goal at the dying moments to tie the knots at 3-3. With only eighteen seconds left onto the clock, Goti scored the tying goal to conclude the game at a 3-3 draw.
Marc Ganzi set the pace for Piaget Black with two goals, while Lucas Lalor added a solitary goal. From the other side, Tomas Goti was standing ahead with two goals while Gracida accounted for a single goal in the tie-up.
The remaining games of the round robin will be discussed in the second instalment of the two-part series.
