  1. I wouldn't say you are paranoid.  I would say you just know a lot of piano playing homeschoolers.  :)

In our  area the popular musical hobby is singing, whether in productions or in a choir.

  2. If a homeschooled student is going to learn a musical instrument, it makes sense to learn one that can be played alone. A trombone, for instance, needs a band to sound its best. Homeschoolers typically do not have access to band rehearsals.

  3. For most of my friends, they do piano, but while we have one, none of my kids have learned to play. They play around, but not enough to know it. Mostly they are into guitar and violin.

  4. I think all children should learn to play a musical instrument if possible, but that goes for schooled kids as well. Maybe the piano is just the easiest to find a teacher for since you are not in a school band program which provides many more opportunities for learning to play other instruments. Piano is not usually part of a band or orchestra, but more of a solo or duet instrument.

What do you mean, paranoid? Why would you be paranoid about playing piano? For home music-making, it is one of the most versatile, since it can be used for anything from sing-alongs to complex classical music. Be very glad you know how.

  5. I have noticed that most of the homeschoolers I know (myself included) play some sort of musical instrument and started with the piano. manily I think because it is one of the easiest to play and a great introduction on how to read music

  6. Due to the stigma surrounding homeschooling of children lacking in "socialization" and "not getting out much", you see a lot of parents supplementing this with extra curricular activities such as piano, art, swim and other such activities.  Homeschooling families have a broader schedule they can attend such classes, and since most of them have a parent home they've not got that worry of the parent being unable to commute them.

As a home school parent of children in a Charter Home school Program I get a fund to help pay for extra curricular classes and so I have one in piano, one in violin, and one in ballet and they each chose what they wished to do.  Next year they'll all be taking their music classes along with soccer and swim.  As mentioned before it's my way as a parent to make sure they get out and socialize, as well as learn a new skill and grow both mentally and physically.

  7. Might be a local thing. I've not come across that myself.
