Many many years ago when I met my husband we had our first date on the Champs Elysée in a piano bar. The last time we returned to Paris we couldn’t find it but weren’t entirely sure where it was. It was in an arcade type place directly on the Champs Elysée. There were boutiques and the bar was on a lower level. One thing I do remember is that the bar itself was on a lower floor but there was a big clock type thing that rose up through an opening into the floor above. This clock was run by a mechanical system that involved large wooden (I think) balls about the size of those used in 10 pin bowling. The balls would run down rails and then be scooped up and taken back up to the top. It sort of ran like a water wheel and this motion made the hands turn.I can’t believe they have got rid of this structure as it was quite an impressive feature. Did we get confused and look in the wrong place – a sign saying Champs 21 looked familiar – or has it gone? We’d love to find it again if it’s still there.
