Is there a program that is free and trusted where you can compose music for a piano and have it played back for you on a realistic sounding piano (not midi sound), and you can save your work?

is quite a good free music composer.  It does work with midi sound, but that's not really a bad thing.  Midi isn't an audio format, it's more like sheet music; a music notation.  It's true that MIDI music generally sounds awful when you play it back on the cheap sound card that comes with your computer. If you play a midi file on a high quality instrument (like a good digital piano) it will sound very good. The quality of the sound depends on the instrument.

Saying that midi sounds bad is like saying Beethoven sounds bad because you once heard a 6th grade beginner band playing "Ode to Joy" and it was awful.
