my question is: being that i haven't gone ice-skating in about 5 years, is it one of those things that you can pick up almost right where ya left off? or do you have to learn again?

i used to be real good.

  1. it takes a little time to get your balance right back where you were before, but it's not too hard. usually once you learn a skating skill well, you keep it for life.

    good luck!

  2. You won't have to totally start over . . . you already know what to do . . . it's just a matter of reviewing the skating skills and  getting your body to do what your mind knows what to do!  Once you get your feet under you and keep practicing, you just might catch up!!

Some of it depends on your age range too.  If you are very young, 5 years can mean a lot (growth spurts - weight gain - bigger feet - growing period!).  You may need new skates, and it always takes some adjustment time breaking in new skates anyway.

I have many friends who are adult skaters who used to skate when they were "younger".  Many of them have taken huge breaks - well over 5 years.  Again, depending on the age range, some do pick up "close to" where they left off.

I personally haven't skated in about 4 years now.  I skated once last year - and granted it did feel a bit strange, I still was able to jump and spin (though it didn't look or feel pretty - wink).  I think I could still do the elements, but it would for sure take a lot of practice to get back to where I was to do the elements "well".

Best of luck when you go back on the ice!!!

  3. You def. pick up where you left off. I did. I stopped for at least 6 years and I was really good when I started back up! I was really surprised that I was. I live in Ohio and when I went to New York I ice-skated for the first time in like 6 years and I thought I was going to suck because I hadn't done it for so long and I was just as good as I was before.
