Question:

Picking the right sole for your shoe?

Any links or advice on how to pick the right sole?

I'm choosing between two shoes right now, one with a really soft sole (timberland) and one with a hardish, firm sole (new balance). What are the advantages and disadvantages of each sole? Is it better to go with the softer one? I read somewhere that a more firm sole is actually better for longer walks but i don't know if that's true or not.

I need it for walking and i will also be using it as a casual shoe.

  1. When you say you need this for walking that sort of implies rough terrain or hill walking if this is the case the harder sole is preferable.

Walking shoes need to be sturdy well constructed with a strong sole to avoid invasive sharp objects good ankle protection and waterproof when walking.

Softer soles are less likely to give that protection and the added flexibility is suspect on uneven ground.

The overriding thing however is comfort and protection. No shoe is any good if your feet hurt so be comfortable above all but also be mindful of the features of the shoes that afford the most protection.
