I am picking up my puppy from NY. It's a 2 and a half hour drive. I don't want to bring a crate. I just want to be holding her :) she is paper train btw. I keep hearing YOU HAVE TO bring a crate is this true? I plan on making at least 2 stops on our way to our house. so it will be okay not bringing a crate? lol.

  1. Absolutely not, you definetly need a crate weather you're driving or not.

  2. I would bring a crate. That way if the puppy gets carsick then you won't have vomit all over you and your car.

Besides it is safer if your puppy is in a crate.

I always travel with my dogs in a crate they don't mind it. They usually sleep the whole time.

  3. The reason you're hearing you have to bring a crate is because it's too dangerous for your puppy to travel loose in the car with you holding her on your lap.  What if you're in an accident?  Or have to make a sudden stop?  That puppy's going to go flying and get hurt.  Actually, a really reputable breeder is going to be really reluctant to let that puppy go without being in a crate.  You'd be much wiser and the puppy would be much safer in a crate on a long trip like that.  Bring along a couple of toys for her and she'll be just fine in the crate on the way home.

  4. Are you driving? If so, you plan to hold the puppy and drive. Not a great idea?

A crate is a good idea. It will keep the pup secure during the ride AND if he gets carsick (a good likelihood) then it happens in the crate.

  5. u don't need a crate but u could bring 1 if u want.  the pup probably will bark in the crate(not crate trained yet).  just have a crate at your house.  bring a leash, collar, water bottle, portable dog bowl, dog p**p bags, paper towels and cleaner, a dog towel or small blanket.

    good luck.

  6. Some places require you to have a crate and to buckle the crate in. (like the car seat deal for newborns at the hospital). Peepee pads for the floorboard isn't a bad idea. A puppy pad for your lap, or you can use the peepee pad. A small blanket in case you are sitting in front of the a/c vent. Puppy or baby wipes in case of car sickness...it can come from either end. lol. A small container to put water in. Just a few pieces of hard puppy food. Depending on the size of the puppy, you may need a small collar or leash as many new owners have lost their new babies when the stopped for a potty break. Congratulations and the best of luck.

  7. I picked up my puppy on the PA/NY border, in Erie. It was a 10 hour drive and thank GOD we brought a crate. My fiance drove the entire time and while I did hold my puppy for a little bit, I put him in his crate for most of the ride. He peed on my lap a few times and went potty on his pads in one side of the crate (we bought a wire one with a sectional so he could grow into it) The crate was a lifesaver so we could both get some sleep.

  8. Its okay. Omg, what is wrong with you people? My puppy hates the crate, and if you keep her on your lap, she whines when she needs to go to pee. She doesn't feel comfortable peeing in fricking laps! I've brought my dog on 3 hour drives and it was entirely comfortable! No crate required. Tooo heavy and if the car bumps she'll jump and bump her head.

All I think you should bring is at least a dog bed. Unless you don't want to.

  9. Well, it certainly would be safer to bring a crate if you are doing the driving, that way you won't have the pup crawling all over you while you're trying to drive. Plus, he/she will be more secure inside of it with a snuggly blanket during the drive. And, since you already have a crate, I hope you do, because you will need it for crate training, it wouldn't hurt to bring it along.

  10. You plan to stop a couple of times for what?  To let your puppy out to pee?  Your puppy, unless fully vaccinated should never be put on the ground out in public where it could catch parvo, distemper or other disease.  Bring the crate, you can hold the puppy, but you may find you need it if the puppy gets sick or pees on you.
