Question:

Picking up trash?

When we pick up trash around the community we put it in yet another bag and in turn end up throwing it back into the environment just in a different area. Is there anyway I can pick up garbage and get rid of it myself or find a way to make sure I really am helping and not just putting a band-aid over the issue

  1. It's great that you care. You may have a recycling center nearby that you could deliver recyclable trash into. It's simple to use.

Try reusing some of it, too. Like, if you found lots of cans one day, you could take some string, tie it to the cans, and tie the other end of the strings to a block of wood, you could ship it off and be happy with yourself because Uncle Bob in Mississippi has a new "Redneck Wind Chime".

There are dozens more things you could do, but I'm afraid I only can give you these suggestions. I hope they come in handy.

  2. When I pick up trash or litter I make sure and recycle it!  Almost everything can be recycled.  I only throw it in the regular trash if it can't be.

  3. There is a movement to return packaging to manufacturer. They actually are trying to pass laws to make this waste the responsibility of the companies. You can try leaving your packaging at the store, buy things that are not wrapped to death. Makes me sick, I bought a box of candies during the holidays, had 4 levels of wrapping on it. I emailed the company and told them I was disgusted and would never buy any of their products again. That's one option.

  4. Join a group which takes care of a specific area in your community. They will have a method of disposal!

  5. Cans and bottles can be recycled and some communities also have paper recycling. If it's food garbage, I'll scatter it for the birds and it's generally gone in an hour. I wear gloves of course. Or you could compost paper and food scraps.

Regarding stuff that can't be recycled or composted, I've thought about this too, and I've come to this conclusion:

At a landfill, generally they compact the garbage. The heat generated from things rotting will help eliminate bacterias and allow organic materials and even some plastics to break down. Some landfills will capture and use the methane that's generated. It's better compacted and contained in one place than scattered around the neighborhood, right? Thanks for caring enough to pick it up!

  6. well   first if you take the pain of collecting trash then make some energy to classify it too.  recycle the metallic wastes and you may put the bio wastes in your garden(not all) or some pasture near your place.  make an organization and u may even get into some contract with a farming company for the etables and other bio stuff(as manure).

  7. well if you're just picking up food products then you could make your own compost its fairly easy and there are many websites on it other then that the answer is no the trash will ultimately end up sitting in a landfill somewhere
