I live in upstate NY and having a party this Saturday, where the temperature is supposed to be 91 and humid! What kind of appetizers and food can I make to agree with the weather. Can I make hot dips? and I don't want to make anything that will spoil.

  1. You can make all the picnic favorites like potato salad or macaroni salad, as long as you use a mayonnaise that doesn't include egg.

I use a vegan mayonnaise that contains no egg so it doesn't spoil in hot weather. It's called Vegennaise and you can find it at most good health food stores in the refrigerated section or if your Hannaford's has a health food section you might find it there.

  2. watermelon is always a good one for hot days!

  3. fresh frozen fruit-grapes, pinapple, oranges.

Frozen fruit slushies (always fun to have joke ice cubes with bugs in them)

Have a brain-freeze competition. The person that drinks or eats (fruit) the most without giving into the pain wins.

  4. make little finger sandwitches and make fruit salads with cubes of different types of fruit like watermelon, melon, grapes, and strawberries

  5. I would do cold dishes (Garden salad, cold sesame noodles, asian green bean salad) and fruit salad.  Keep them in bowls placed in larger bowls with ice.

  6. You could make egg salad, coleslaw and potato salad - I always use Ranch or Cucumber salad dressing, instead of mayo, when it will be out for awhile.  Or you can make potato or pasta salad using a vignarette dressing.....  veggie/dip trays ... fruit platters....  I'm not sure people will want hot dips, but salsa & chips is always good;  and wedges of cheese w/ crackers is good too (cheese is better room temp, not cold)  ....  firm cookies without chocolate will be best (Keebler's Pecan Sandies are good, or Pepperidge Farm Bordeaux) ..... pretzels, chips & nuts .... a big tub of red licorice!

  7. fruit tray & veggies plater  ( keep in ice ) dips would be ok  as long as it dont contain eggs or manayois maybe when the sun goes down a little start up a grill from sum hamburgers n hot dogs

  8. Salads!

Then fruit- stuff like watermelon, melon, strawberries.

Always remember to keep it light and fresh- no one will want mac'n'cheese or a brownie in this heat :)

    Have a good time.
