Pierre Pennec’s Groupe Edmond de Rothschild leading on Day 2 of 2012 Extreme Sailing Series Act 1
One of the hot favourites to clinch the regatta title, France’s Groupe Edmond de Rothschild skippered by Pierre Pennec hit the leading spot on the second day of 2012 Extreme Sailing Series Act 1.
Pierre Pennec and his crew comprising of Jean-Christophe Mourniac, Hervé Cunningham, Bernard Labro and Adeline Chatenet showed some impressive sailing tactics to push their team on the leading podium position. The fleet began the second day proceedings normally
with the scheduled races under moderate wind conditions and finished the second day without any trouble.
The first day of the Extreme Sailing Series regatta finished with two teams on top podium spot, Groupe Edmond de Rothschild and the local favourites Oman Air skippered by Morgan Larson.
However, the second day did not go according to Larson’s hopes and his teams slipped one place down at number two position with 84 points.
Despite coming one podium down, the competition is still close for the home favourites because results fluctuate with one little miss during such intense competition. Meanwhile, Oman Air’s new leader, Larson believes his team has had a great day and sailed
impressively according to the plans.
Speaking to the local media, Larson said, “We did a really nice job on the more traditional windward/leewards. Then when the reaching starts came into play I didn’t really have the timing to well and made a few errors that cost us a couple of points. But
all in all the guys are doing a great job, we would be really happy with a podium finish and that’s our goal.”
The Extreme 40 fleet sailed in four scheduled races on Day 2. The first race was taken by the Oman Air followed by back-to-back podium places by the French team. The fourth race was a bit tough but Larson’s crew consisting of Will Howden, Charlie Ogletree,
Nasser Al Mashari and Max Bulger showed some consistent tactics and grabbed the top place.
During this tussle between both teams, Oman Air finished on second finish overall with just one-point difference from Pennec’s team at 84 points.
Leigh McMillan and the crew, Ed Smyth, Pete Greenhalgh, Hashim Al Rashdi, Rachel Williamson, on The Wave, Muscat hit the third spot in the overall standings with 72 points.
