Pieter Jan Postma dominates Finn class on Day 2 of 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta
A splendid performance by Netherlands’ Pieter Jan Postma on the second day of 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta shot him to the third place in overall standings of the Finn class. Postma had a superb sail at Weymouth and Portland under challenging
conditions to retain their lead on Day 2 of the regatta. However, his stunning sail couldn’t win him the first spot in the overall standings.
The third race on Day 2 started following up a general recall under tough weather conditions, as the wind gusted around 18 to 20 knots South across the racing site. To make the best out of such conditions, most of the yachts began near the committee boat
and sailed up the right side of the course.
Postma sailed his way in front by the leeward gate one and extending on the remaining lead, moved towards a sound victory. The wind gusts increased in the fourth race, second of the day, and the sea showed a bit of aggression with big waves prevailing on
the course. Sailing to the favouring right side of the racing area again, Postma sailed round the top mark to grab his second victory.
While speaking to the local media at the end of second day, Postma said, “We had a different course from yesterday, with less current, but there was less in near the shore , so you had to go a little bit to the right upwind and the other side on the downwind.
In the second race you could play the shifts a bit more. Both times I started at the boat and went to the right and it played out well.”
He added, “If you are just a bit faster than the others all the time it makes a big difference. I am very happy to have my speed back again, I am a year back in the boat after a a break and so it's nice that everything is falling in place more and more,
but this is only one day, anything can happen in the rest of the week.”
The overall result after four races is given below:
1. GBR Ben Ainslie 2, 1, 6, 5 = 14 points
2. FRA Jonathan Lobert 3, 2, 3, 6 = 14 points
3. NED Pieter Jan Postma 12, 3, 1, 1 = 17 points
4. CRO Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic 4, 8, 4, 3 = 19 points
5. EST Deniss Karpak 1, 7, 10, 12 = 30 points
6. NZL Dan Slater 11, 18, 5, 2 = 36 points
7. ESP Rafa Trujillo 14, 5, 2, 15 = 36
8. FIN Tapio Nirkko 10, 11, 8, 9 = 38 points
9. SLO Gasper Vincec 8, 4, 13, 18 = 43 points
10. USA Zach Railey 5, 9, 26, 8 = 48 points
