Pieter Weening says goodbye to Rabobank as he signs with Green Edge – Cycling News
Pieter Weening, who started his career in 2004 with team Rabobank has signed the next season with GreenEdge and will be representing the Australian team for the coming Tours. He had a stage victory at this year’s Giro d’ Italia and also claimed his first
Tour de France stage victory in 2005. Weening was chosen the Dutch Cyclist of the Year in 2005.
GreenEdge is an Australian based cycling team introduced in January 2011 with 70 percent of their riders from Australia and has already signed Jack Bobridge, Cameron Meyer, Travis Meyer, Eritrean Daniel, Stuart O’ Grady, Daniel Teklehaymanot and now Pieter
Weening.
Weening believes that Australia is one of the most exiting cycling nations of the world and he is impressed by the way they are producing so many talented young riders every year. He mentioned that he always wanted to be part of a team from Australia and
wanted see if they really do things differently.
Team management is delighted on signing the Dutch cyclist and believes that his addition will benefit the whole team as Shayne Bannan who is the General Manager of the team shared his opinion about the cyclist and said, “Being able to win the two biggest
tours in the world doesn’t come by chance, particularly when you look at the quality of the victories across such difficult terrain.”
Bannan further added that, Pieter has some really impressive cycling skills and he is a great prospect for the coming tours. His climbing abilities have made him famous all over the globe and will play his important role in the team.
The 30-year-old stated that his time with Rabobank was great and he is hopeful for the coming season with his new team as he mentioned, “It’s now time for next stage in my career and joining GreenEdge is a great new opportunity for me to help build a team
and pursue my own ambitions.”
Weening is only 30 years of old and has already gained a lot of experience as he has been cycling since eight seasons. He is at the prime stage of his career and Green Edge is really delighted to have him around the team as his inclusion will certainly strengthen
the team.
