Pigeon help!?

Ok recently 2 pigeons have made a nest outside my balcony, underneath a well hidden box area. The past few days i saw them kissing and stuff so im guessing they are male and female. And when they were making the nest this week, i saw one of them in the morning bring twigs from trees back to the hidden nest. But just recently, i dont see them in the nest or even bringing any twigs to keep building the nest because i sneaked and saw that they were not in the nest. However, one time i did try to sneak and one of the pigeons saw me. So what does this mean? Are they not going to stay in the nest anymore? I would like for them to lay eggs as it would be interesting to watch, but just yesterday and today i have not seen them in the nest, except that they were just around my balcony walking around but not actually going inside the box to sit on the nest/build it.

Also, why do pigeons make nests anyways, is the reason because they are about to lay eggs? And hav i scared them or something?

  1. stay away from the area to see if they will come back or do you see them building another nest some where. When they get back to your nest don't go over there try watching from a remote area. We had just finished watching finch build nest lay eggs feed babies and now babies have flown off. It was cool. Good Luck you have a 50/50 chance

  2. hello

yes, the reason ALL birds make nests is because they are going to lay egs, hatch them and have a family!

btw...  just becasue they don't come EVERYday dosn't mean they wont come back .. they will

we had a magpie nest in our garden a month or two back ... and they came did bits of the nest came back the NEXT week... and did some more and it was another whole week befor ethey came back, the female layed her eggs.. and the pair hatched out 6 magpies .. 5 of whom have since fledged and can now be seen locally..

I doubt you would have spooked them to be hones.. birds spend alot of time at their nests and will not just give up their nests like that ..

they would need to have a constant threat ,(eg a cat) there at all times. so they probably will come back =)

I think That is basiclly your question answered

hope you have a better understanding =]

  3. Birds make nests in which they will lay eggs.  This is instinct.

It would certainly be interesting to have a nest of baby pigeons to observe.

Something has scared the parents from the nest.  It may be you or something else.   Stay away from the nest for a few days and be patient.  You might put up a  mirror so you can observe them without frightening them.

  4. of course they make a nest to lay eggs and you probably did scare them off.

  5. Awww, you should probably keep clear of the area for a few days, just to get them a little more comfortable about being there. like the answer above, you have a 50/50 chance, so cross your fingers!!
