I do not know this word is appropriate to say.

In general, most of Japanese foreign travelers tend to put a small money as a tip underneath a pillow on the bed, called "Makura(pillow)-zeni(money)"

Here in Japan, Yahoo Japan answers, I can see a lot of questions on this topic.

So I am curious on how you guys do this when leaving a hotel you stay at ?

I used to live in the US for many years, there was no people do this way. But typical Japanese who travel to abroad for the first time tends to be trained by travel agents since there trip is package tour based mostly.

  1. I leave at least a dollar per person per day on the dresser for the maid. That is standard for US travelers, my father always did that too. You leave extra money if you got especially good service.

  2. money under pillow is called a tip

  3. I have never been to Japan, but when I have traveled I have left a tip in the hotel room for the chamber maid.

Just a kind word of thanks, maybe a thank you note... I know it is her/his job, but gratitude and thoughtfulness are always important.

As for the amount...it depends on what I have left at the end of the trip.

    Nothing wrong with gratitude.
