Pilot Pen 2010: Caroline Wozniacki reaches the final round
The world number two tennis ace from the women’s side, Caroline Wozniacki, defeated her Russian opponent Elena Dementieva in the semi-final round of the Pilot Pen tennis competition 2010 in a total of three sets on Friday. The final match score was 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/5).
As a result of this victory, the top-seeded women at the US Open has made her way into the final in New Heaven.
Caroline, the championship’s two-time defending winner, improved to 12-0 in her three visits to New Haven.
Dementieva started off the match quite well by straight away winning the first set. However, Caroline responded strongly during the second set and went on to win the next two in order to book her spot in the final of the Pilot Pen tennis competition 2010 in New Heaven.
In spite of the fact that Elena took an early lead during the third set; Caroline didn’t give up and fought back strongly on Friday.
"I was constantly telling myself to keep on fighting hard till the end,” Wozniacki said after the match.
As far as Dementieva’s game is concerned, she did play extremely well to give a tough time to the second-ranked Caroline in their semi-final clash of the tournament.
Wozniacki, who captured the Rogers Cup Women’s title just a few days ago clarified that she doesn’t feel any kind of pressure being a top-seed at the Flushing Meadows in New York.
“You feel the pressure when you are placed in a position where you feel you won’t be able to meet up the expectations of everyone. However, when you believe in yourself and have faith in your own abilities then there is no pressure at all. You just go out there and enjoy playing your natural game,” said Caroline.
Nonetheless, before she handles New York, Caroline will take on Russian Nadia Petrova in today’s final match of the Pilot Pen tennis competition 2010 in New Heaven.
Petrova made her way into the final round after getting the better of her compatriot opponent Maria Kirilenko in a total of three sets. The final match score was 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Kirilenko’s backbone started bothering her during the second set of the match. Although, she took a medical timeout during the second set, she later on expressed that she couldn't play her normal game afterwards.
"I didn’t want to give up so I continued in spite of the fact that it was hurting badly till the end,” said Maria after the match.
Kirilenko further said that she would consult a doctor before finally deciding her status for the upcoming final major of the year, the United States Open tennis tournament, starting from Monday in the city of New York.
"I noticed right from the start of the match that she had problems in moving,” Nadia said. "So that was my first target, to make her run and try to grab as many free shots as possible.”
On the men's draw, Sergiy Stakhovsky advances into the final round on Friday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Thiemo de Bakker from Netherlands.
"I am glad that I served quite well during the match and I also managed to close out the set with the help of my serve and started off the second set more strongly that gave me confidence to win the match and confirm my place in the final round of the Pilot Pen tennis competition 2010,” said Sergiy after the match.
Stakhovsky will meet Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan in the final battle. Istomin reached the title match after knocking down his Serbian opponent Viktor Troicki in a total of three sets. The final match score was 7-6 (12/10), 3-6, 6-2.
