Pilot Pen 2010: Preview Women’s draw
The Pilot Pen Tennis competition is one of the professional tennis events contested on the hard court prior to the final Grand Slam United States Open championship of the season. The tournament is currently held in New Heaven at the Cullman Heyman Tennis Centre and is a premier competition on the tour.
As far as this year’s contest is concerned, let us have a look at the top and bottom half of the women’s draw.
A total of four players from the top ten rankings are participating at this year’s Pilot pen tennis tournament in New Heaven. While Caroline played an impressive knock at the Canadian Open in Montreal, there is no reason for her failure in New Haven. The Dane is hundred percent fit and holds the class to advance to the later stages of the competition. Moreover, her effectiveness on court is also matchless from the rest of the players participating in New Heaven without any question. Caroline could meet Melanie Oudin in her second round clash, a battle that would prove to be more significant to the young American in contrast to the last year’s winner.
Melanie hasn't played up to the mark since the last year’s United States Open tennis tournament. Therefore, she will definitely be looking forward to play a better knock here in order to boost up her level of confidence prior to the United States Open championship. All she needs to do is to believe in her own talent which she definitely possesses in abundance and recreate her magic of a season ago.
Caroline could meet the fourth seeded Elena Dementieva or the sixth seeded Marion Bartoli in the semi-final round of the tournament with either Alisa Kleybanova or Flavia Pennetta in the quarters.
Bartoli, despite losing, played well last week in Montreal and is likely to come out strongly in the next couple of days.
Dementieva, on the other hand has also improved her serve greatly over the last few years, but still it’s not up to the mark and that could affect her game against the top seeded Dane.
Shortly, Caroline Wozniacki is currently looking to be one of the finalists in New Heaven beyond any measure of speculations
The bottom half of the women’s draw will highlight the reigning clay court French Open winner and finalist. While Francesca Schiavone managed to regain her lost form in Montreal just a few days ago, Sam Stosur was pulled to retire from the competition as a result of her injury. Stosur has had greater amount of success as compared to Schiavone since the French Open final, however her form on hard surface is still uncertain.
Samantha is seeded at number 2 this week in New Haven. The eight seeded Nadia Petrova could appear as one of the quarterfinalists along with Stosur in New Heaven this week. Nadia hasn't been playing at her very best this year; however her deep baseline driven game can upset any top seeded woman without question.
With the United States Open semi finalist Yanina Wickmayer in this draw, Schiavone could be kicked out in the quarters. The trouble for Schiavone would be the former top ranked tennis ace from the women’s side, Dinara Safina who previously faced her in the third round of the Canadian Open last week. According to the experts, Safina will get the better of her Italian opponent in straight sets.
While Daniela Hantuchova and Maria Kirilenko are also included in this section, Wickmayer along with Petrova still remains the top two players for a big matchup. While Nadia is likely to reach the final battle in New Heaven, Caroline is also expected to play strongly with a win in Connecticut, prior to the final major of the season.
