Pilot Pen tennis competition 2010: Marcos Baghdatis beats Igor Andreev in New Heaven
It’s been a good season for the Cypriot tennis ace, Marcos Baghdatis, as far as the United States hard courts are concerned. He continued his winning form in his match yesterday at the Pilot Pen tennis competition 2010. The top seeded Baghdatis survived through wind and rain to make his way into the third round of the United States Open tune up event. After defeating his Russian opponent, Igor Andreev, in a two setter clash on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-2 6-4.
The Cypriot earlier got the better of current number one tennis player, Rafael Nadal, as he advanced into the semi final round of the ATP Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament just a few days ago.
In fact, his performance over the last month has included victories over three top ten players from the men’s side. He dismissed the tenth ranked, Fernando Verdasco, on his way to the final of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic tournament, the seventh ranked, Tomas Berdych, in Cincinnati last week as well as the top ranked, Rafael Nadal, before losing to Roger Federer in the semi finals of the competition.
Baghdatis, who is coming back to Flushing Meadows after a period of three complete years, will definitely be hoping to continue his form in the upcoming United States Open tennis tournament as well. The season’s last Grand Slam has been the least successful major event for the 2006 hard court Australian Open finalist, who has yet to advance beyond the second round at Flushing Meadows.
The top seeded Cypriot will meet Juan Ignacio Chela, an Argentinean tennis ace in his next round match of the Pilot Pen tennis competition 2010. Chela, earlier secured his 20th match victory of the year as he got the better of a wild card entrant from the United States of America, Donald Young in a total of three sets in New Heaven. The final match score was 5-7, 6-4, 6-0.
In other action on Tuesday, the second seeded Thomaz Bellucci as well as the third seeded Fernando Gonzalez, lost their respective clashes in New Heaven.
Brazilian Bellucci was toppled by Lukas Lacko in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-4 6-7 (4/7) 6-0. Gonzalez on the other hand was eliminated by Radek Stepanek in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6-2 6-4.
Tuesday was also not so perfect for the local wild card entrants, Donald Young as well as Taylor Dent as they both suffered an early departure from New Heaven. Donald on the other hand was hammered down by his Argentinean tennis opponent, Juan Ignacio Chela, in a three setter clash. The final match score was 5-7 6-4 6-0.
Andrey Golubev in his match on Tuesday defeated Maximo Gonzalez with a final match score of 6-3 2-6 6-2, while Romanian tennis player, Victor Hanescu, downed Daniel Brands in a total of two sets.
Other seeds to win on Tuesday were Thiemo De Bakker, Denis Istomin as well as Florian Mayer, who claimed victories over Mikhail Kukushkin, Benjamin Becker, as well as Jan Hajek respectively.
The twenty-five year old Teymuraz Gabashvili, a qualifier from Russia also advanced after Xavier Malisse withdrew from the match on Tuesday while trailing 4-2.
