Pilot Pen tennis competition 2010: Samantha Stosur defeats Sara Errani
The Australian tennis ace from the women’s side, Samantha Stosur battled hard to defeat her Italian opponent Sara Errani in the Pilot Pen tennis competition on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (4).
The second-seeded Stosur won the first set of the match comfortably, however was broken on two occasions during the next set in New Heaven. The Australian later on did well to come back in the third set after saving a total of four match points on Tuesday.
“I just tried to focus completely even at times when I was down in the match and once I got those four points during the third set it really boosted up my level of confidence and I never looked back and went on to win the match,” said Stosur after the match.
Stosur, who didn’t contest in Montreal as well as Cincinnati as a result of her right arm injury said that she was a bit concerned about her form here in New Heaven.
“I actually had not hit over thirty serves in any of my practice matches yet so it was a good show for tonight and I am glad that I won it in the end”, she said.
In another action on Tuesday, the Russian tennis player Elena Vesnina was ousted by her compatriot opponent Maria Kirilenko in a three-setter clash in New Heaven. The final match score was 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
Despite the fact that Vesnina made it into the finals last year, the Russian had to play the qualifying matches in order to participate in the championship, coming all the way from Montreal on Saturday just about two hours prior to her first clash. Maria while commenting on her game after the match said,
“I started to commit a lot of double faults and my serve didn’t support me as well. However, it started to improve during the third set of the match.”
The French tennis ace, Marion Bartoli in her match on the grandstand court yesterday also managed to knock down Alona Bondarenko in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-3.
Bartoli after the match said that the wind didn’t let her play as aggressively as she wanted to in her yesterday’s match in New Heaven.
In the men’s section, the third-seeded player Fernando Gonzalez who was playing in his comeback match from a knee injury that didn’t allow him to play since the clay court French Open tournament, was downed by Radek Stepanek in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-4.
Stepanek on the other hand was also participating in his fourth championship after returning from his knee wound and had lost in the first round of his previous three competitions.
“After such a long break, you have to work really hard in order to get back in form,” said the Czech player.
In another match, the sixth-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo got the better of his American opponent Taylor Dent in a total of three sets on Tuesday. The final match score was 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. On the other hand, Donald Young was dismissed by his Argentinean tennis opponent Juan Ignacio Chela in a three-setter clash. The final match score was 5-7, 6-4 6-0.
The top-seeded player from the men’s draw, Marcos Baghdatis also battled through strong winds and thirty minutes of rain delay to claim a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Igor Andreev in his first match of the Pilot Pen tennis tournament on Tuesday.
