Pilot carrer guide/outlook question?

Hey guys i am thinking of getting into the airline pilot field, i was wondering how to go about doing it. I am curently in college getting an unrelated degree, i see that many airlines ask for degrees but they don't specify what kind, so is any degree ok? Also i was planing to attend flight school after i graduate in about 2 years i am 25 right now, am i to old to get in the field now?

After doing some research i have noticed that the cost can be substantial, my main concern is how is the job market doing? How hard is it to build flight time? I keep hearing that becoming and instructor is a good way to build up flight time but how many of the graduating pilots can your flight school really hire, are there any other jobs out there that will hire you with the low graduating hours so that you can build up time? and how few and far between are they? haven't found many.

A friend of mine that just did flight school mentioned time sharing to build hours how does that work?

Thanks

  1. The job market sucks and will for quite a while. Building flight time is very difficult, expensive and can take many years. I

just retired from a fabulous forty year flying career and all I can really tell you is this:

MAN YOU REALLY GOTTA WANT IT.

  2. --Any degree.

--Not too old.  Enter flight school during your college years if you can afford it.

    --Can't predict the pilot-job market.

Being an instructor is a good way to build flight time.  The turnover for flight instructors is usually fast enough that there are good chances of getting hired.  There are other entry level jobs, too.

With low time and a multiengine rating you can try to get on as a copilot at a charter company.  If you work there in some other  capacity you will get used eventually.

There are other jobs to look at.  They're not all entry level jobs, though.  Tow banners, tow naval gunnery targets, haul skydivers, aerial tours, aerial photography, USDA aerial surveys, fire spotting, fish spotting, pipeline patrol, traffic patrol, powerline patrol, microwave signal checking, ferry planes, et cetera.

Forget time sharing.  --Too many hours to pay for.  Get someone to pay you to fly.
