  1. First off...  "the medical has just been increased for a commercial pilot from 6 months to 12 months."  I have no idea what this means.  The 1st class medical is 6 months and is NOT required for commercial ops. It *IS* required for any crewmember acting in the capacity as an ATP.

2nd class medical is good for 12 months and IS required for commercial ops.  If that has changed recently...  I missed it... it has been that way for what... 50 years?

How much money do FedEx and UPS pilots make...  it depends on  Equipment, Seat, and Seniority... and the amount of flying that you do.  Do they pay as well as the major air carriers.. oh yes...   do they pay more...??? They do now..... because most of the major trunk carriers AA, DAL, UAL, NWA etc...  have all taken a major hit on the pay scale giving "back" to the company in an effort to keep the airline in business.   If you are fortunate enough to be hired by either of them,  and you should include DHL in there also as they are a very nice company to work for...and they bought ABX.... you will be quite pleased with your pay, benefits, and work schedule. I actually heard pilots say that "they would never work for them" and all the while I was doing my darndest to get on with them.  They are EXCELLENT companies to work for...  and a friend of mine that flies for FedEx laughingly showed me the BCA magazine's poll for the year 1992... where the highest complaint on the airline pilots lists were... of course...  PAY,  schedules, time away from base.. etc...etc...  the # 1 complaint of the FedEx pilots was .... their salads were not really all that great...    they had to go THAT far down the list.. to find something to complain about.

Do whatever you have to do...  I know a guy that quit flying, and went to work for FedEx because he was told that after one year of working on the ramp in MEM.. he would be granted an interview to the flight ops (he was already a 121 captain)  so he went and handled boxes for them  for a year, and he did get the interview and was hired. True story. He had 10 years flight experience, but could not get an interview... so he was willing to go that route... most would not. Can't say if that policy still exists, or EVER existed.. but he is there... so he did it some how...

  4. A lot more than Comair, a name that appears frequently on YA Aircraft. Word is Fed Ex is very big on inside recommendations and ex-military. But they pay well and don't have those pesky passengers. Although I'm not big on 121, Fed Ex and UPS sound like good places. (Wouldn't want to fly the older equipment they have in their fleets, necessarily.)

  5. Slightly off topic, but your question has already been answered.

lludwig:  The first and third class medical durations have indeed been extended for pilots under the age of 40, as of July 24th.

Operations requiring a first class medical (ATP) require a medical every 12 months for pilots under the age of 40, and 6 months for those 40 or over.

Operations requiring a third class medical (private/recreational) require a medical every 60 months for pilots under the age of 40, and 24 months for those 40 or over.

Note that operations requiring a second class medical (commercial operations) have not been changed.

  6. An experienced UPS or FedEx pilot usually earns a six figure salary.

Incidentially, the medical for a commercial pilot has just been increased from 6 months to 12 months (if you are under the ge of 40)..

Best of luck with your vocational aspirations.
