Question:

Pilot training funding?

Really want to do one of the Integrated ATPL courses based either in the UK or Australia.

However I can't work out how the h**l people afford it!

I've only found one sponsorship scheme which I'll apply for, but if that doesn't work out????

Other than that where do people find the £60k odd you need.

Can't imagine anyone will just lend me that money unsecured!

Any ideas?

  1. Parents mostly, If your dad's a senior training captain earning £120k pa, he'll probably have the odd £60K stashed away somewhere to start his son off on an airline career.

Other than that, see my answer on this thread:

I think the biggest question to ask is will your £60k ever see a return on investment?  Will you make it to that senior training captain salary in 20 years time? What will be the effects on the airline industry of oil shortage and global warming by that time?

PS, In the UK there is a big difference between funding for a University degree and funding for an ATPL course. University education is heavily subsidised by the government and if you are from a poor background you'll get extra subsidy and student loans which are interest free in real terms (i.e. interest rate no more than inflation rate).

For ATPL training, there will never be government funding, since if there were the government would be accused of providing unfair subsidy to the air transport industry. This means that if you are from a poor background your chances of doing an ATPL course are very slim. Even if you get on a  "sponsorship" scheme which is able to arrange an unsecured loan for you, most poor kids would be scared to take on a £60k ($120,000) debt.

  2. How would you fund a college education? Not much different. If you start to imagine what cannot be done, like an unsecured loan, you'll get nowhere.

  3. student loan
