Question:

Pilots License and Vintage Aircraft purchase?

I would like to gain a pilots license. What is the cheapest way to go about this? After I gain the license I would like to purchase an old warbird, WW2 or so, preferably a small bomber or cargo, C-47 or B-25. What costs would I be looking at for both and do I need another license for multi engines?

  1. For the planes your looking at you're definitely gonna need a multi engine license. That would be above and beyond the standard private pilots license. You can get the privite license in most cases for around 12K.

  2. Expect to spend US$5,000-8,000 for a private pilot certificate.  The multi-engine rating is to be added to the pilot certificate.  Multi-engine time is more expensive, so expect to have US$12,000 to 15,000 tied up in your pilot training at that point.

There are very few C-47s and B-25s left flying.  You can get into that market for $600,000 to $800,000.

You should be aware that these old birds are VERY costly to own and operate.

    Have fun.
