Pilots License...but I'm not a US Citizen...Can I still get it?

I live in the US and want to get my VFR / Private Pilots License (and after I log enough hours, my Commercial Pilots License and IFR, Multi-engine, etc.. certificates). However, I am not a US Citizen or permanent resident, I am merely a work authorized registered alien with citizenship in another country (trust me, I've been trying to get my permanent residence here in the US). Can I still get my pilots license? I have a drivers license, and I intend to work (after getting my commercial pilots license) only here in the US.

  1. Absolutely -- do it!  Go to a local flight school and before you begin training, you will simply have to submit your information for a background check by the TSA.  After that, you can get whatever pilot certificate and ratings you want.

  2. you will have to be vetted by Alien Flight Student Program

    Department of Homeland Security.

to register,  Candidates log onto the AFSP Candidate website www.flightschoolcandidates.gov to submit their background information and flight training request(s). Candidates must create an AFSP account and submit a training request and the required documentation. The Candidate will then receive an email with detailed instructions on how to complete the application process. Each step must be completed before a Candidate advances to the next step. Once these items are completed, the AFSP performs a security threat assessment to determine whether the Candidate poses a threat to aviation or national security.   go to https://www.flightschoolcandidates.gov/a...
