  1. It takes a while to get used to ATC.  They use very specific words and phrases that are simple in themselves, but they tend to speak quickly, and if you don't know what to expect, it can be hard to make out what they are saying.

Also, actual radios in aircraft tend to be clearer than what you hear on the Web, although not by much.  It's mostly a matter of getting used to it.  And if you don't understand, you have to be willing to ask for things to be repeated (if you're a pilot, that is).

  2. The audio quality of the web site can be somewhat garbled.  Get a portable scanner with aviation frequencies, and go sit near the airport.  You will hear it sharp and clear.

  3. yes

  4. You have to learn ATC terminology in order to understand what they are saying.

  5. get ur ears checked

  6. what the pilots hear is usually clearer for a two reasons.

They actually have a real aviation grade radio receiver/transmitter, whereas the links on liveatc.net are mostly from police scanners.

most of the time (where it matters) the pilots are in the air, where there is less landmarks (mountains, high rises etc) to interfere with radio waves.

during severe weather conditions like a thunderstorm, radio transmissions are less clear to hear however.

also, when you listen to it often, even if it comes in a little garbled, you still subconsciously understand.

I have a aircraft radio in my house, which is at most 2 miles away from CYUL, and it sounds slightly different then the scanner I have. It is clearer, but not by much. English isn't that hard to understand over the radio. At CYUL the controllers switch between English and French with dizzying speed and speak both just as quickly.

oh, and the internet might also play a role in the bad quality of the transmissions. If the guy decides to upload at a low audio bitrate, it is likely that the sound quality will be degraded and short, curt words, or words spoken with a hiss or another sound in the background, will become incomprehensible.
