Pinched nerve in neck compounds Los Angeles Dodgers' Casey Blake – MLB Update
Los Angeles Dodgers’ third baseman Casey Blake’s return hung in the balance on Sunday, August 21 as he failed to completely recover from the pinched nerve in his neck. This problem has persisted for long since the start of the season; something that can
possibly have its long-term impact.
To avoid more harm that the neck problem can bring, the third baseman is exercising extreme caution. "Obviously, this neck thing is pretty serious," he said. "I want to be able to move my neck when I'm 50."
With the problem worsening with the passage of the time, there were even rumours circulating that the third baseman could eventually consider retirement. Initially, the speculations were dismissed, but he thinks it’s now a matter of reconsideration.
Given the fact that the player is in his late thirties at 38-years-old, there is a solid reason why the neck problem has assumed such unprecedented importance to decide the fate of his career. If he does not go for rest, or the problem does not subside,
the chances are that he may suffer a great deal.
Asked what he thought of retirement, and if he was considering it: “Sure," he said. "Obviously, I don't want to go out like this. Hopefully, with rest in the off-season this thing goes away and I can get ready to play another season. I'll cross that bridge
when I get there."
From what it apparently seems and as he spelled it out himself, the player is concerned for his health. Considering the fact that he had earlier received warnings from his doctors not to play at the dear expense of his health, even the renewal of contract
is no longer an issue.
Previously there were talks about his intention to ask his team to have his 6-million-dollar deal extended. But as things have changed, quite unexpectedly, there are more pressing issues about his health than to get into the bickering pertaining to the contract.
For him, the certainty of a bright future lays in how he handles this ostensibly incredible challenge to his health with continuous problem of neck. "I'm not even worried about that right now," Blake said. "The main focus is just getting healthy and doing
what's best for my neck and my future."
Having missed last few games, Blake has played 59 games this season, relatively fewer than any other regular player of his team due to the neck injury. He has scored 29 runs with .249 averages, having hit 23 RBIs and four home-runs.
In the days to come, it will be determined if he can continue playing with the serious neck injury as he undergoes some tests.
