Pineapple plants - FL

Does anyone know how to start growing a pineapple plant from the cut off tops? I've also been told that this top will produce an edible pineapple once per year. Is that valid? I live in Central Florida - estimated region 8 or 9.

  1. I'm no expert, but as I understand it you can apply some rooting hormone to the underside of the cut off top and put it in some soil/compost.  Obviously all the green bits have to be above the surface.

  2. It usually takes more than a year for the fruit to be produced, but once it has, it should produce 1-2 per year.  I'm not sure if there are tricks to get it to start other than just planting it in a potting soil mixture.  Ours get watered 2x a day and seem to be doing well.  Hoping to get some fruit this fall!

  3. I live in Central Florida as well (Ocala) and my parents have planted pineapples several times and get nice plants.  I've seen them produce tiny little pineapples, but nothing that got to be something you could eat.  Anyway, below is a link to some great directions, at the wonderful garden site, You Grow Girl.
