Ping Nome putter played a key role in Hunter Mahan’s success at Accenture Match Play Championship – Golf News
Hunter Mahan, who won the Accenture Match Play Championship last week, has given credit to his new Ping Nome putter behind his success against the world number two, Rory McIlroy, whom he beat in the finals.
His second World Golf Championship victory came just after a few weeks of his decision of changing the putter.
Changing and using different putters during a player’s career is a very common practice in the world of golf.
However, it is rarely seen that a player makes changes prior to one of the greatest events of any season, as Mahan did recently.
Mahan told that he was forced to make a hard push with the traditional blade putter that was part of his bag in most of the tournaments he played in his career.
Therefore, after a careful consideration and practicing several putters, he decided to stick to the Ping Nome, a face-balanced putter which helped him making the putts comfortably.
“This one has a little less offset and it's helping me aim better. So basically I'm aiming where I think I'm supposed to be aiming,” Mahan said.
“Before I was aiming a little more left than I thought. So I was kind of pushing my putts. I wasn't just getting like a true roll and a true read”.
“I felt great with my game coming in,” Mahan continued. “I made a putter switch to the Ping Nome putter and felt great on the greens immediately”.
According to the reports, Mahan was seen practicing with Ping’s representative, Matt Rollins, and found that he was aiming slightly to the left with his old putter when he thought it was straight to the hole.
He discovered the error through a laser attached to the putter and decided to experiment with several putters by Nome.
Therefore, he ended up with Nome that has higher moment of inertia compared to the traditional blade putter.
The product has not been launched yet in the market and is expected to be available to golfers in the first week of April this year.
The victory that Mahan earned in Arizona has increased the goodwill of the product, which will in turn benefit the sales of the company.
