"salad" sandwiches (such as egg salad, chicken salad, etc.), chips, fruit salad, potato salad, sliced vegetables. try to aim for light foods and foods that are as mess-free as possible.

Sandwiches but none made with mayo (so it won't spoil on a hot day), cold fried chicken, cold pasta salads and brownies, for sure.

Picnic foods are best when it fits these criteria:

1)  They will keep well at room temperature (or whatever weather you will be in)

2)  They will hold up to being transported

3)  They will be relatively easy to eat (not require a lot of utensils)

4)  They will not be too messy to eat

That said, try some of the following foods:

1)  Mini sandwiches filled with something that will keep (i.e. tuna salad, chicken salad, peanut butter and jelly, etc.)  The smallness allows you to share easily.

2)  Cookies, crackers and nuts

3)  Sturdier whole fruits: oranges, apples (versus mangos, pears, etc.) or cut fruit in containers (watermelon, pineapple...)

4)  Cut veggies (carrot sticks, celery sticks, cucumber slices, etc.) and dip

5)  Small deserts (mini tarts, lemon bars, chocolate cupcakes-- anything that won't require a bunch of utensils, plates and napkins)

6)  Bottled water (picnics can be dehydrating)

Some people like to bring cheese, but I find that when the weather is warm, the cheese sweats prematurely.  Instead, I bring a cheesy dip (like spinach or artichoke) that holds up to temperatures and still tastes great with crackers.

Ideally, picnics aren't supposed to be like whole, sit-down meals.  They are supposed to be a selection of foods that are easy to eat, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors and each other's company.
