My daugher has what I'm pretty sure is pink eye. I plan on taking her into the doctor first thing Monday morning. In the mean time I was hoping to find something to give her some sort of relief from the burning and such. I saw at wal-mart that they had some over the counter pink-eye meds and I was wondering if anyone else had tryed them and what their experiences were and if they would offer her any kind of help untill i can get her in to see the doctor.

  1. We just went through this...the good news is that when you call your Dr they wont have you come in ,they will call an RX  in for you. Its so contagious that they don't want it in the office.

I haven't tried the OTC meds, but hopefully you Dr will call it in.

  2. not all doctors will call in a prescription without a visit as the first person suggested. Most doctors will want to see you before they prescribe something you may not need. It's ridiculous to say they don't want it in the office because it's contagious. There are a lot of things that kids see a doctor for that are contagious, they still need to be seen.

For now I would just do warm wash cloths on the eye and have her wash her hands often. Call the doctor first thing Monday morning and get an appointment. Not all pink eye requires medication. They might just give you some drops for the irritation. I would call the offic now and get a call back from the on call doctor and ask him/her if there is anything you can in the meantime like those drops you saw at the store, and see what they say.

EDIT: the vicks sounds like a god idea if the child is older however a small child might rub the vicks into their eye and that would be painful and not good.

  3. you could aslo rub in some bazatracin in her lower eyelid.  that will kinda put her at ease.  it wont cure it, but it will help.

    done it before.

  4. take her to the urgent care now -this is her vision and the infection is very contagious.  have her wash her hands well.

  5. I havent tried otc meds, I didnt know they exist. my doc told me when my daughter had pink eye I could give her saline drops to help with the irratation along with the antibotics she was taking (just dont do it at the same time) and you have to make sure it is just saline solution with no other chemicals in it. you can also try to have her put a warm wash cloth over her eye and see if that helps sooth it. Make sure once she is on antibotics for 24 hours you change all the bedding so she doesnt become infected again and you will have to notify the school it is pink eye so they can notify other parents cause it is so contagious. At our school my daughter had to be out for a full 72 hours and have a drs note that gave permission for her to go back to school

  6. make sure she washes her hands frequently and the otc stuff does work get the pink eye releif drops they do work it takes a few days but it does work my mom used them nto to long ago and it cleared ehrs up quickly which made em happy b/c with havign a visual impairment i am very suecptable ot getting pink eye like when i have been really sick or soemthign i ahve to be careful cause my eyes can get infected really easily and it looks as though i ahve pink eye but its not so my mom had ot write a not for me once when i was in elementary because of my eyes gettign infected and evryone thought i had pink eye but it wasn't it was because i ahd been really sick anyways i hope those drops work fo ryou good luck

  7. this will sound strange but my herbalist told me to put "vicks" just under the eye. It helps to drain the ick out of the eye. It works  son had pink eye and the drops the dr gave him just iritated the eye more and didnt help the vicks cleared it up in about 3 days . we put it on 3 times a day under the eye(not close enough to get in eye).

    good luck

  8. I know that this might sound silly, but try tea bags.... Just make a cup of really strong tea (use a few teabags), then pull out a tea bag, and hold it over the pink eye for a half 15 minutes, or however the child is willing to. The longer the better.

    It works incredibly

  9. I have used it. It's for viral/non-bacterial, so it won't cure, but it will certainly help until you can get a prescription. Is the discharge clear (viral) or thick/yellow(bacterial and precription)? Similsan will clear up viral. There is no restriction on dosage/day. Also, it can be used in conjuction with the prescription, so your daughter can use it when her eyes itch.

Some people are more susceptible than others. Get her in the habit of (1)washing her hands frequently, especially after petting animals, blowing her nose, restroom, and (2) keeping her hands away from her face.
