Question:

Pioneer Receiver and Blue Ray Compatibility....(HDMI)?

I'm having trouble hooking up my Pioneer Receiver(VSX-1017TXV-K 7.1) with a DVR or/and Blue Ray (SAMSUNG BD-P1400). When bypassing the Receiver I have no problems, but when I go through the Receiver I get sound only thanks to audio cables. I've checked all assigned inputs and HDMI connections, but still no luck. Are these two products compatible? Thanks for any feedback!

  1. Have you tried different music sources, say from a Blue Ray  disc? Most machines are "compatible: with each other. The problem might lie in connection or music source.

  2. The HDMI on that receiver won't transcode (e.g. convert analog audio to digital and output on HDMI), but it will pass through both audio and video.

Some DVRs don't output surround audio over HDMi (just video) and need a separate audio connection.

I'm not sure what you mean by "I get sound only thanks to audio cables".

I would try first only wiring HDMI from BD player to Pioneer. Do you get sound? If not verify HDMI light is on on the front panel. If not you are not getting connection.

Now add connection via HDMI from Pioneer to display (you don't say if video is working). Do you get video from BD Player. If video but no audio you probably have a setting issue (many receivers have to have the audio input assigned and this is done through the input setup menu).

You probably are now in a position to set up the DVR the same way.

    Hope that helps.
