Pioneer SX-316-S REceiver / Amplifier - No bass response at all. Help!?

This is the whole story ...

I recently bought the Pioneer SX-316-S Receiver / Amplifier. This was a seperate unit purchase, ie not packaged with speakers etc. I am using Wharefedale Diamond (cant remember the model) for the front, Gale centre speaker, and Mordaunt Short rear speakers. I do not have a sub-woofer.

My problem is, there is absolutely NO BASS RESPONSE on my system. This is very surprising as even the most basic of Receiver / Amps that I have used in the past have decent bass response with my speaker set (FYI, I have previously used Sherwood and AIWA Receiver / Amps of comparative power output). With this system, the sound I get is only the mid and high ranges.

Read some forums where they mentioned setting up the speakers to 'large' from default 'small' but nothing in manual about this.

Also cant find anything about an equalizer ... kinda weird as even the cheapest amps have some sort of equalizer.

hooked up my gutar amp to sub woofer sounds graet u just need a powered sub!!
