Pipe Screen Question?

I just bought a pipe for the first time and the guy also gave me some pipe screens. What are pipe screens even for? Are they necessary to use?

Pipe screens are a necessary hassle.  to keep clean so the smoke can get through without getting so clogged they  are hard to get a decent hit.  You could seriously injure yourself by inhaling exploding seeds from your favorite 'tobacco'

it depends on what type of pipe you have...if its metal, you'll usually want to use a screen, or if the hole is very big, then you may want to use the screen

for most pipes, you don't need one.  I never use screens.
