Pipe’s Master Overseer bags a victory in the Betfred Midlands Grand National Chase Handicap
Master Overseer set the pace in the Betfred Midlands Grand National Chase Handicap which took place at Uttoxeter on 17th March, 2012. He earned his trainer David Pipe a National win as entered the race with odds of 11 to 1 and defeated Major Malarkey
by ¾ length.
The nine-year-old gelding showed no signs of weakness and challenged stable-mate Major Malarkey at the start of the 4 mile 1 ½ furlong race. He emerged from the race as a winner with £37,017.50.
Owner Brocade Racing were also proud of the gelding’s performance as he had pulled up in the Grade 3 Coral Welsh National Chase at Chepstow on 27th December, 2011.
"I think the better ground helped him today - he has won on heavy but I think that's because it slows the others up and he just stays."
Tom Scudamore, who was the mount of Master Overseer led him to victory. After the race, he stated that "He's tough, very tough - I got headed going to the last but he just kept galloping."
Major Malarkey was beaten by an extremely narrow distance which could have easily been overcome. Coupled with Sam Twiston-Davies, the nine-year-old gelding ran with a steady pace but finished two fences before the finish line.
He finished fourth place in his seasonal debut, Grade 3 Betfred Classic Chase which was held at Warwick on 14th January, 2012. He pulled up in the Grade 3 Betfred Grand National Trial Handicap Chase at Haydock.
This race showed remarkable progression and Twiston-Davies showed appreciation and was satisfied with his runner’s performance.
Ballyfitz finished 16 lengths after Major Malarkey. He fell behind as he struggled on the fences, which cost him the race as he had no chance of keeping up with the leaders.
Trained by Peter Niven, Posh Bird was the race favourite in this race. The nine-year-old daughter of Winged Love, out of Lady Oakwell, was the favourite with odds of 5 to 1. She finished in ninth place as she struggled in final circuit. She lost her pace
and fell behind all the other competitors.
The David Bamber owned mare was unfortunate in this race as her performance in the previous has been impressive. This time luck gave up on her but she hasn’t lost all her potential.
Niven’s diligent training was demonstrated in the Betfred Eider Handicap Chase at Newcastle on 25th February 2012 as Posh bird finished 3 lengths behind the race favourite Portrait King.
Another Palm, Honourable Arthur, Mohayer, Tamarinbleu, Maringo Bay and Mr. Moss all pulled up in the race and could not complete it as a result. Due to heavy rain, the course was difficult to complete. It threw some of the good runners off their track while
others took advantage of it.
