The Spanish centre-back limped out during the game against Spartak Moscow with an ankle injury and the club doctors have revealed that he is now a doubt to play El Clasico on the 7th of October.
Barcelona faced Spartak Moscow in the opening game of the UEFA Champions League group stages.
The Catalan giants were favourites to win the game, and even though they came out as eventual winners from the fixture, Moscow were able to surprise them by taking a 2-1 lead right before the hour mark.
However, the 2-1 lead before the hour mark wasn’t the only shock which the Barcelona boss, Tito Vilanova, received during the game.
Barcelona’s first-choice centre-back, Gerard Pique, had to limp out after the tenth minute as the club doctors have revealed that he picked up an ankle injury.
The doctors treated Gerard Pique on the field but he was unable to continue and Vilanova had to deploy the summer signing, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-Song-c4804, in the centre-back position.
After the fixture, the medics have confirmed that Pique will take long to recover from his ankle injury and have ruled him out of La Liga fixtures against Granada and Sevilla.
Moreover, the club doctors have also stated that the former Manchester United defender will not be playing in the Champions League fixture against Benfica.
With so much at risk when Pique is out, the Catalan giants would not want to lose him during the game against Real Madrid on 7th October. However, with the extent of injury which Pique has picked up, there are doubts that he might not recover
in time to face http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604’s arch-rivals, Real Madrid.
While speaking about http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gerard-c14664 Pique’s injury and how they will cope up without him, Barcelona boss, Tito Vilanova, said:
“We hope Pique will be back soon but if not then no problem.”
“We believe in our academy players and are not afraid to give them a chance.”
After winning the Champions League fixture against Moscow, Barcelona will be returning their focus to Spanish La Liga where they will be facing Granada over the upcoming weekend.
Catalan giants are currently sitting at the top of the points table but Pique’s injury is definitely a big blow for Tito Vilanova.
