Question:

Piranha - blinded, and weird algae-like thing in gills?

I have a pet piranha, and he was fine yesterday, but this afternoon it looks like he's gone blind in both eyes (one eye was already blinded and whitened out from illness a while ago), and he has weird, white (kind of milky-white) algae-like stuff clinging to his gills. His tank is kept clean and the filter is fine, and he's been eating fine, too. Does anybody have an idea what happened, and if there are any medicines for it? Thanks in advance. :)

  1. could be some sort of fungus . also i hav a silver shark and his eyes went cloudy but then i moved him to a bigger tank and now his eyes are crystsal clear.

  2. It probably is some kind of disease. You can go to where you got him and ask what it is. they might have a medicine to treat it there.

  3. it could be ick

  4. Possibly flukes, which aren't uncommon in both the eyes and gills.  I'd start treating with malachite green + formalin (Quick Cure or Rid Ich) immediately (after removing any activated carbon from the filter).  If you're not big on those two carcinogens, you could try copper (Coppersafe, Cupramine, Aquarisol, or Organicure).  Keep in mind, the above medications will stain silicone and acrylic, so a hospital tank should be used.
