The St Lawrence is one of the longest rivers in North America. It flows from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of St Lawrence and into the Atlantic Ocean-a total distance of more than 1,000 km.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the St Lawrence was central to all communications, fishing and trade, exploration, and the war fought to gain control of the territory.

The Aboriginal people had named it "Path That Walks," and later the Europeans called it "Cod River." In 1535, on the feast day of St Lawrence, Jacques Cartier was staying on the Mingan Islands at the river's mouth, and he officially named it the St Lawrence River.

Water from the Great Lakes meets the Atlantic Ocean around Île d'Orléans, near Quebec City. As it flows closer to the sea, the water becomes saltier. There are also great variations in tides and water temperature, providing habitats for many different fish and marine mammals.

One of the better known acts of p****y to occur in Canada was Bartholomew Robert's 1720 raid on Newfoundland's Trepassey Bay at the mouth of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Roberts activities in the area were not restircted to just Trepassey Bay, see pages 108-112 in Richard Sanders' biography of Roberts, If a Pirate I must be... on Roberts activity around Newfoundland and 111-112 on the Trepassey raid specifically.

The Corvette "USS General Pike", built 1813, 875 tons, 145 ft, 28 24lb cannon.

"After almost a month of maneuvering and stalking to gain an advantage over the British, she joined Chauncey's ships in a brief encounter against the British off the mouth of the Genesee River 11 September. On 28 September the two forces again met at York Bay, Ontario, and engaged in a fierce, but still indecisive, battle. During heated exchanges of gunfire between American and British ships General Pike fought in heavy action against British ship Royal George and rendered gallant service throughout the encounter."

The Royal George was a 20 gun sloop.

Two small fleets battle in Lake Champlain....

US fleet led by the Corvette "USS Saratoga" built 1814, 734 tons, 143 ft, 8 long 24lb cannon, 6 42lb carronades, 12 32lb carronades.

Brittish fleet led by the Frigate "Confiance", 1200 tons, 30 24lb cannon, 6 32 lb carronades, 1 24lb on a pivot mount.

"Macdonough, himself, aimed a long 24-pounder at the bow of Confiance, pulled the lanyard firing Saratoga's first round, and gave the signal, “close action.” The shot cut the British flagship’s anchor cable, ripped up her deck, and smashed her helm. Then, all the American ships opened fire.

Confiance’s first broadside struck Saratoga from point blank range, and the American flagship reeled from the blow. Half of her men were felled by the shock; but most of the sailors picked themselves up, carried their dead and wounded comrades below, and returned to the fray. Since Confiance’s green gunners failed to reset the elevation of their barrels, each of her subsequent volleys tended to be higher than its predecessor and, while shredding Saratoga’s rigging, did little structural damage to the ship.

After almost two hours’ fighting, Saratoga’s last serviceable starboard gun, a carronade, broke loose from its carriage and hurtled down the main hatch. Macdonough then dropped a stern anchor; cut his bow cable; and, with the help of tars hauling on lines to kedge anchors, swung the ship around bringing her fresh, port, broadside guns to bear on the enemy.

The badly battered British flagship, with Downie and her first lieutenant dead, also attempted to wind ship but was unable to do so. Helpless to do further harm to her adversary, Confiance struck her colors.

Then, by pulling on her starboard kedge line, Saratoga’s sailors turned the corvette’s guns toward Linnet and opened fire. The British brig, although severely damaged and unable to move, gallantly kept up the fight for about an hour before surrendering. At that time, Finch and Chub, the other two relatively large warships in the British squadron, were already in American hands; so the surviving English gunboats fled toward Canada."
