Pirelli: Different colours will distinguish six different types of tyres – Formula 1 update
As the 2011 Formula 1 season is going to start in a few days, Pirelli has revealed the final marking of different types of tyres.
Pirelli mentioned that each tyre will carry its own affixed colouring on the side-wall.
Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery told the media, “We're very excited by the prospect of returning to Formula 1 for the first time in 20 years, and we're aiming to be a proactive and colourful partner in Formula 1. So what better way to symbolise
this than a brightly coloured selection of Pirelli logos to run on the sidewalls?”
He went on to say, “These will enable both live and television audiences to tell at a glance who is on what compounds, which will be vital knowledge as tyres are set to form a key part of race strategy this year.”
Recently, the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) officials announced that the hard and soft compounds of Pirelli tyres will be used for the Australian, Malaysian and Chinese Grands Prix. Hard and soft compounds mean silver and yellow tyres for
those races.
With regards to winter testing, all the teams were busy testing on the different compounds of tyres. However, some F1 drivers highly criticised the Pirelli rubber during their test runs.
On the other hand, Pirelli test driver Pedro de la Rosa has discussed Pirelli’s performance in the upcoming season and said that the drivers will expect a lot from the tyres but they will have to use the best strategy to overcome the degradation issue, during
the race.
He said, “The feeling of when the tyre has gone off will be extremely important, and this is something I realised during the Pirelli testing. The tyres have a linear degradation until suddenly they have a huge drop off. And that huge drop-off, you will have
to avoid it during any of your stints. And it will be a driver dependent decision, not a team dependent one.”
He further added that he is still not able to predict the pit stops per race but if only three stops take place during the race, then it will be fantastic.
The degradation issue is still expected to happen in the upcoming season that will definitely create a tough competition among the strong F1 contenders and provide more fun to the viewers.
