Pirelli claims Mercedes will be provided data from YTD – Formula 1 news
Pirelli have confirmed that they will provide all the necessary data to Mercedes despite the fact that they have been banned from the Young Driver Test.
Pirelli motorsport boss Paul Hembery said, “We will give all the teams all of the same feedback and give them all of the same data, so they will have the information. The teams will have a very clear tyre test programme; they have to run what we tell them
to run. They'll be running the 2012 structure with the medium and the hard compounds, plus a prototype hard compound.”
He went onto say, “Mercedes I guess do have a lot of data from the tyre from last year in terms of the way it'll affect aero from the set-up. I think they would have benefitted obviously from being able to run but they're not going to be able to.”
The German squad was involved in a big controversy this year, as they illegally conducted a test with the tyre manufacturers in Barcelona, which benefitted them to a great deal. As a result, they managed to win a couple of races and their qualifying form
improved, which was already good enough to allow their drivers secure pole positions.
However, rival teams Ferrari, Red Bull and Lotus did not like the overall situation and demanded the FIA to take some action against the illegal test. Since the pressure was too much, both Mercedes and Pirelli were asked to give some explanation to the sport’s
governing body.
After the hearing was complete, it was clear that the Silver Arrows had gained benefit from the test, thus they were reprimanded and were banned from the YTD. On the other hand, the tyre manufacturers were not given any harsh punishments and got away with
only a reprimand.
Although Mercedes accepted the ban earlier, they are now worried to a great deal because of the recent tyre changes made by Pirelli following some safety concerns during the British GP. They requested the FIA to be a part of the YTD, but did not get permission.
On the other hand, rival teams were given a green signal to conduct the testing with their lead drivers.
