Pirelli covers 10,000 km of test drive
The new tyre supplier to Formula One has just completed its five-day testing session and seems pretty satisfied by the results. The Pirelli test drivers, Pedro de la Rosa and Romain Grosjean carried the driving session at the
Sakhir circuit in Bahrain, last weekend.
As the session ended late last evening, a Pirelli press conference was held to explain the findings of the tests. The drivers as well as the officials believe that the next season of Formula One, with the Italian tyre supplier, will bring a new thrill and
excitement to the sport. Up till the last race of the 2010 season, Bridgestone had been the sole tyre provider for around 14 years.
The two test drivers, de la Rosa and Grosjean tested both the tyre compound and construction and have drove for around 3,000 kilometres in Bahrain. With this the Italian company has already completed 10,000km of testing.
While talking to the media, Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery said, “I think this goes to show that, wherever you are in the world, uncertain weather can arrive in a variety of forms. But Formula 1 is all about expecting the unexpected, and we were
able to quickly react to these changing circumstances by extending our test.”
He also stated that the work that was actually planned for the five-day test finished a little earlier than the scheduled time and hence they had been able to do a little extra work also. He explained saying, “We ran through our entire dry tyre range, and
to have reached the point where we are at now, just five months after the F1 tyres ran for the very first time at Mugello in August, is an incredible testimony to the commitment and capability shown by every member of our team.”
While describing the strategy of the tests, Hembery said that two different drivers have been asked to drive for them so that different sets of feedback could be taken and then compared to make the precise analyse. However, he was glad that both the drivers
appreciate the tyres and are satisfied with the initial tests.  He concluded saying, “The fact that they were both saying the same positive things at the end of the test only underlines the progress that we have made."
