Pirelli decides to strengthen tyres ahead of 2013 German Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Pirelli motorsport director, Paul Hembery has said that they have decided to strengthen the rear tyres for the 2013 German Grand Prix after the occurrence of some unpleasant incidents in Silverstone.
Five tyres exploded at Silverstone circuit in the British GP which raised a lot of safety concerns for the drivers. In addition, the debris which flung due to the explosion created more problems for the drivers in the back.
Many drivers, which mainly include Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, Felipe Massa of Ferrari and Jenson Button of McLaren, criticised this year’s Pirelli compound tyres after the preceding race and asked for proper solution for the problems so as to ensure the
safety of everyone in the sport. Moreover, the FIA have also called a meeting on the coming Wednesday in which they have asked the Italian tyre company to propose the required solution.
Nevertheless, Hembery has said that they have planned to make the rear tyres stronger for the German GP and will move to 2012 tyres in the Hungarian GP.
“What happened at Silverstone was completely unexpected and it was the first time that anything like this has ever occurred in more than a century of Pirelli in motorsport,” Hembery said. “These incidents, which have upset us greatly, have stressed the urgency
of the changes that we already suggested - which will be introduced during for free practice in Germany on Friday.”
Besides, he expressed immense gratitude towards the FIA for their support and stated that they will do everything to make sure that their tyres fulfil all the safety standards of the sport.
“In particular, the adoption of winter tests, arranged with the FIA, that are more suitable for tyre development and the possibility of carrying out in-season testing will contribute to the realisation of tyres with increasingly improved standards of safety
and performance,” he added.
Hamilton has already stated that he is satisfied with the changes Pirelli have decided to make in their tyres ahead of the forthcoming race. Additionally, his teammate, Nico Rosberg has also showed support for Pirelli changes.
Let’s see how all the contenders perform at Nurburgring in Germany this weekend.
