Pirelli desperate to alter tyre allocation rule for 2012 – Formula 1 news
Pirelli is pushing for a change in the tyre allocation numbers for the 2012 Formula 1 season.
Formula 1 teams have been asked for this rule change before but the teams did not agree. Pirelli hopes this time they will be able to convince them to have the rule changed.
Pirelli wants the rule change so that they do not have to carry wasted sets of rubber to every race, because after every race weekend each driver has a set of unused tyres left. Since all the tyres are mounted on hubs pre-events, when they are removed they
have to be destroyed after a race ends.
Pirelli director Paul Hembery has been at the forefront of the rule change and hopes to convince the teams to alter the rule for the 2012 season and beyond.
Talking about why he thinks it is imperative to alter the rule, he said, “They would like us to take 2,500 tyres around the world all year and not use them.”
He further added, “There is no movement on it yet, and I will have a go with the teams again. We need to go with the team principals and give them all the facts from the season so far, and say; maybe we can use them on Friday, so teams have an extra set
on Friday morning.”
“They do a lot of development work on a Friday so maybe that is a way of doing it. I am sure common sense will prevail,” added Hembery.
The title fight is set to be finished after this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, and Pirelli is putting in a lot of focus on working out a balance on next year’s tyre allocation rule. Hembery has shown indication of an aggressive approach towards the choice
of tyres to measure its impact on the remainder of the races in the ongoing 2011 Formula 1 season.
Pirelli has also opted for a harder compound rubber choice for Korea and Hembery believes it is a radical way to test it out. While he expressed his concern of not having any option to do testing, he said they might have to push things.
