Pirelli forecasts one stop strategy at the Italian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Motorsport director of Pirelli, Paul Hembery told that one stop strategy is expected at the Italian Grand Prix as the tyre wear is very low.
He told that they had front right tyre shoulder wear over the Curva Parabolica at turn 11 but the teams have made modifications to cater to it. He added that the teams are close to finish the race without any stop with the hard tyre compound, therefore it
is possible that drivers would finish the race with one stop only.
Hembery said, “We're looking at a one pit stop strategy. There are very low levels of wear. On the first session we had some front right tyre shoulder wear going through the Parabolica and the teams made a few modifications and wear levels were very low.
They are pretty close to being able to do a full race on the hard tyre to be honest.”
The motorsport director told that the medium compound starts wearing out after the 12th or 14th lap.
“So it'll be a one stop strategy with 0.3s to 0.5s difference between the two compounds. Degradation on the hard tyre is minimal and the medium tyre was starting to fade after 12 or 14 laps,” he added.
Hembery unveiled the fact that the some teams may experience overheating and blistering problems during the race. He added that last year one or two teams faced such problems at the Monza circuit and it would be a problem if more cars had the same problem.
Besides, he said that teams may get difficulties in managing the race.
Furthermore, he told that teams face such problems because of the heavy braking after heavy speeds. He added that it puts excessive load over the tyres.
He added that there is a tendency among cars to take one pit stop less, as compared to the last year. In addition he told that Pirelli would try to change this trend to keep the sport interesting. Moreover, he told that it is a moving target because engineers
eventually resolve the challenge over time and try to decrease the pit stops, as far as possible.
