Pirelli hope to stay in Formula 1 for five more years after 2013 – Formula 1 news
Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery has said that they are hoping to stay in Formula 1 for five more years after 2013.
In 2011, the Italian company became the sole tyre supplier of the sport. Even though, Pirelli’s contract is going to expire at the end of next year. However, Hembery has shown desire to continue supplying tyres to F1 even beyond the end of the next season.
It will be important to note that tyre management has been one of the most critical factors in this year’s championship as the Pirelli compound tyres degrade too early in the races which eventually create difficulties for the drivers.
Furthermore, there are many who have strongly criticised the tyres which mainly include the seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher. Nevertheless, Hembery defended the position of his company and fully supported the new generation of Pirelli tyres.
In addition, he said that although they have faced immense criticism over this year’s tyres, but they are still looking forward to come up with better compound in the next season and are earnestly looking forward to extend their contract for few more years.
“It's not at any cost and every cost because we're a business and there's parts of the world that are really struggling at the moment and are still struggling. But in terms of the concept, if all the conditions remain viable we'd like to continue for the
medium term which is what we've really always said and we haven't changed from that. But equally if factors outside our control change then that can change their viewpoint as well.”
Besides, he said that they are targeting to sign two more three-year deals with F1 so as to be able to create better understanding about the sport and to capitalise on their investment which they have made until now.
“I think most people would think you need to do 8-10 years really in a sport,” he added.
It will be interesting to see with which compound Pirelli come in the next season and whether they remain in the sport beyond the next season or not.
