Pirelli hoping for some tyre regulation changes in 2012 Formula 1 season – Formula 1 news
The lone tyre suppliers of Formula 1 Pirelli have recently revealed that they are pushing for some major tyre regulation changes for the 2012 Formula 1 season as the amount of unused tyres left after each race is a lot at the moment.
According to Paul Hembery, the motorsport director of Pirelli also assured that the teams will not miss an extra set of tyres they are supposed to get for each venue despite this rule change.
“At the moment if they want to keep the same regulations we're going to go to the FIA and say: There's no point in having six [hard] and five [soft], we might as well have five [hard] and five [soft] and we save money,” Hembery told the media.
Pirelli provides the teams with 6 sets of hard tyres currently and 5 soft tyres for a driver each for every race weekend. Other than that, Pirelli provide the teams with wet-weather tyres as well.
“We know we need to find a universally accepted solution because it's just a waste. It's pointless. Not everybody's against. I think it's one of these things that often they don't appreciate. It's easier sometimes not to make a change,” he added.
Hembery stated that if this rule change is implemented next year, a lot of money would also be saved and that it would also make it easier for the tyre suppliers as well.
The main reason why this rule change is being discussed is that the teams usually have a set of hard tyres to spare at each race as a result of which they are wasted at almost each round.
Since there are 24 Formula 1 drivers on the grid, a lot of tyres are wasted at each round especially this year. Therefore, in order to save costs and time, it is believed that the officials are going to review this rule change and probably come up with a
solution which is going to work for both the teams and Pirelli keeping in mind that the conditions play a major role as well at each venue.
