Pirelli looking for a solution to decrease tyre degradation – Formula 1 news
The lone tyre suppliers of the 2011 Formula 1 season, Pirelli have announced that they are going to investigate the problem Paul di Resta of Force-India faced with the degradation of the new tyres.
Paul had stated that due to the fast degradation rate of the new tyres, the rubber starts to fly off after a certain point. He said that the rubber flies towards the drivers’ direction and the small pieces felt like “marbles” which hurt him a lot.
After Paul’s concern, Pirelli said that none of the drivers on the grid raised the matter before but they vowed to look into this matter. As promised, they did investigate the issue and now they say that they are going to try their best to come up with a
solution.
“These rubber 'marbles' have always existed in Formula One, but the characteristics of Pirelli's new compounds mean that the pieces are on average larger and softer than the hard and round 'marbles' that have been seen at grands prix in the past,” according
to a statement released by Pirelli officials.
According to the performance of the new tyres in the first two races of the season, it seems that Pirelli have succeeded indeed in making tyres which degrade faster than the Bridgestones of 2010 in order to make racing more exciting as requested by the International
Automobile Federation.
“The faster tyre wear compared to previous years can lead to strips of rubber being deposited on the track, which vary in size but are generally the shape and consistency of toffees, weighing between 10 and 20 grams on average,” the Pirelli officials said.
Because of the fact that the new tyres degrade more, the teams are bound to go for at least a two-pit strategy which makes racing more unpredictable and tests their performance in the pit line as well.
The third race of the 2011 Formula 1 season will this place this weekend in Shanghai, China.
